As my brother came with a friend for a 2 weeks road trip around California and neighborhood states, I traveled with them for 4 days. 4 days to run on sunny roads, between deserts and mountains. 4 days, 4 posts.

Wake up projected at 5am. Real at 5:15. Leaving at 5:20 with the car to reach a point of view a little bit far. Arrival at 5:29, the sky is already orange. The sunrise was indicate at 5:33, we're coming just on time. 20ish people already waited that the sun lights its first ray inside the canyon, in the cold that a desert night could create. As we're in the South Rime, it's growing up in front of us. The canyon ground is very dark. Then the sun show itself. The canyon enlightens itself little by little.

Around 5:45, Damien and François want go back to sleep. As I know I won't be possible for me to sleep again, I decided to walk back alone alone, by using the pedestrian way along the canyon. They go away and I'm starting to walk, stopping sometimes to contemplate the canyon which turn red more and more. It's cold because of the blowing wind. At this moment, I wanted to call a French friend, but the network told me that I can't. Nevermind I'm texting him.

Continuing my way I meet more and more people when I'm getting closer to the hostel. One group prepares themself to walk down to the canyon, others runs and others walk, like me, by keeping an eye in the canyon. After walking 3/4 of an hour to go though 4 miles (I'll learn that later), I'm now where I should leave to canyon to reach the hostel. It's 6:30. The 2nd wakeup is schedule around 8. I take again the free bus to go up to the last West point where we went yesterday, to see the colour change. I'm the only one in the bus. 2 couples took the bus at the second stop and leave it to the 3rd. Arrived at the last stop, I'm going to the edge to see the canyon so uch reder than yesterday. The skimming sun emphasizes the red colour. Almost too red as the pictures we all saw. (cf the last photo above)

Enjoying the view and talking many photos, I'm going down 15 minutes later to reach the room. When I'm arriving, it's 7:30. I let my camera here and go to the loung to take a small breakfast. It'll be a cinnamon roll with an orange juice. (yes, I know, I don't eat too much in the morning). Once I'm done, I'm keeping sit down to read some ad and whistle like a bird, maybe unconsciously. 2 tables away, some people starts to watch the ceiling to see this bird. When they don't see in my direction, I whistle again to keep them looking for an unreal bird. Stop to play, it's almost 8. I'm coming back to the room to wake up them and start this day.

Schedule: Continue along the canyon to the west to see some new points of view and take new photos, to finish at the last point. Then we'll go to Monument Valley which will be the second park of the travel.

Because we stopped at many points of view, we're growing tired a little bit; We're under the impression that we're seeing the same thing everytime. Actually the Grand Canyon is more impressive than cute in my mind. The first sensation stay probably the best. This sensation of voidness, immensity aside us. BTW, we're continuing to the end of the road to finish at the last point of view. It's noon, there is many people and it's very hot. It's difficult to take the place to take the photo at the end of the handrail. This noon, it's picnic again with view on the Grand Canyon this time. A little bit distant of the touristic area, a small squirrel came with us, eating in our hand, even trying to steal our food. An opportunity for more photos and some fun.

It's finish with the Grand Canyon, direction the next step: Monument Valley. To the ones who don't know, it's the big block rock in the middle of the desert. Scenes of many Western, of back to the future 3, Lucky Luke Comics, etc...

when leaving the Grand Canyon, we could see the start of it with many small canyons in the middle of the plain. Some native american are aside the road to seel their products. The road to Monument Valley goes fast in 3 hours in the middle of the desert, with only some others cars. Once pass Kayenta, we're sensing the Western atmosphere, by seeing some block around the road. To enter to the park we have to pay $10. As a matter of fact it's not a national parc but a indian reserve. Once we're parked we're talking some photos and enjoying the landscape. It's not a so big feeling of immensity than the Grand Canyon. Here it's more the atmosphere Indian/Western -emphasizing with the pan flute music-, the landscape beauty, and this blocks so particular.

After a quick break we're talking again the car to road in a non-paved way around the blocks to see more points of view of this monuments. The opportunity to see free horses, the John Wayne Shadow, and to feel more away from the modern civilization.

We made the whole way in about 2 hours, perfect to arrive on time just before 7pm and the sunset. This time the sun is on our back, a perfect light. A native american -not a cow-boy, the hat doesn't make it- pose here for his family (and the tourists?) for shooting some great pictures. He doesn't move from an inch.

Once the sun is away, time for us to reach our hostel. Direction Mexican Hat, a too little village in the same way. The GPS will be totally loose to find this village. We're arriving at 7:30pm to check-in. The receptionist specify if we want eat in her restaurant, we have to go now because it's already 8:30 here. After thinking and checking, we understood that we changed of state and in the same time of hour. We're going to eat now an Indian meal, which lacks of savor. Then in the room, everybody is tired of the long day -sunrise and sunset. The beds got really good springs, I asked my brother to shoot some bed Bed Jump:

Comme mon frère est venu pour un road trip de 2 semaines en Californie et environs avec un ami, je suis parti 4 jours avec eux. 4 jours à rouler sur les routes ensoleillées, entre désert et montagnes; 4 jours, 4 billets.

Levé prévu à 5h. Levé réel à 5h15. Départ dans la voiture à 5h20 pour rejoindre le point de vue un peu éloigné. Arrivé sur le parking à 5h29, le ciel est déjà tout orangé. Le levé était indiqué à 5h33, on arrive donc juste à l'heure. Une vingtaine de personnes sont déjà à attendre que le soleil projette ces premiers rayons dans le canyon, dans le froid qu'un nuit de désert peut créer. Comme nous sommes sur la rive Sud, il se lève tout droit devant nous. Le fond du canyon est très sombre. Et le soleil se montre. Le canyon s'illumine petit à petit.

Vers 5h45, Damien et François veulent rentrer se coucher. Comme je sais qu'il me sera impossible de me rendormir, je décide de rentrer tout seul à pied, en marchant sur le chemin le long du canyon. Ils partent et je commence ma marche, m'arrêtant de ci de là pour contempler le canyon qui rougit de plus en plus. Il fait froid à cause du vent qui souffle. A ce moment là je voulais appeler un ami en France, mais le réseau me dit que l'abonnement de me permet pas d'appeler. Tant pis, on se contentera de SMS.

Continuant ma route, je rencontre de plus en plus de gens au fur et à mesure que je me rapproche de l'hôtel. Un groupe se prépare à descendre au fond du canyon, d'autres font un footing ou d'autres encore font comme moi, marchent en jetant des coups d'œil sur le côté. Après 3/4 d'heure de marche pour parcourir près de 6 km (je l'apprendrai plus tard), me voilà arriver à l'endroit où je devrai quitter le canyon pour rejoindre l'hôtel. Il est 6h30. Le 2nd réveil est prévu aux alentours de 8h. Je reprends donc le bus gratuit pour monter au point le plus à l'ouest où l'on est allé la veille pour voir le changement de couleur. Je suis le seul dans le bus. 2 couples montrons au second point de vue pour redescendre au 3ème. Arrivé au dernier arrêt, je me dirige vers le bord pour voir le canyon bien plus rouge que la veille. Le soleil rasant accentue la couleur rouge. Quasiment aussi rouge que les photos qu'on a tous vus. (cf la dernière photo ci-dessus)

Profitant de la vue, faisant beaucoup de test de photos, je redescends 15 minutes plus tard pour rejoindre la chambre. Quand j'arrive, il n'est que 7h30. Je pose l'appareil et repars pour me faire un petit déj au lounge de l'hôtel. Ce sera un genre de pain aux raisins mais à la cannelle accompagné d'un jus de fruit. (oui oui, je ne mange pas beaucoup le matin). Une fois terminé, je reste assis à lire des prospectus et je fais l'oiseau, sans doute inconsciemment. 2 tables plus loin, les gens commencent à regarder au plafond pour voir cet oiseau. Quand ils ne regardent pas en ma direction, je recommence pour qu'ils recherchent à nouveau au plafond. Fini de jouer, il est bientôt 8h. Je rentre à la chambre pour les réveiller et commencer cette journée.

Au programme : Continuer le long du canyon vers l'ouest pour faire quelques nouveaux points de vue, pour arriver au dernier point de vue. Puis, on partira sur Monument Valley qui sera le second parc du voyage.

A force de s'arrêter à tous les points de vue, on se lasse un petit peu; on a l'impression de voir la même chose tout le temps. Le Grand Canyon est en fait plus impressionnant que joli selon moi. La 1ère sensation reste sans doute la meilleure. Cette sensation de vide, d'immensité face à nous. Bref, on continue tout au bout de la route pour arriver au dernier point de vue. Il est midi, il y a beaucoup de monde et il fait très chaud. Il est difficile de prendre la place au bout de la rambarde pour faire la photo. Ce midi, c'est encore pique-nique, avec cette fois-ci, vu sur le grand canyon. Un peu éloigné de la zone touristique, un petit écureuil se joindra à nous, nous mangeant dans la main, essayant même de nous voler à manger. L'occasion de quelques photo et d'amusement.

S'en est fini pour le Grand Canyon, direction la prochaine étape : Monument Valley. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, c'est les grand blocs de pierre au milieu du désert. Décor de nombreux Western, de retour vers le futur 3, des BD Lucky Luke, etc...

En partant du grand canyon, on a pu voir le début du grand Canyon avec de nombreux petits canyons au milieu de la plaine. Des indiens sont sur le bord de la route pour vendre leurs produits. La route pour Monument Valley se fera assez vite en 3h, au milieu du désert, avec seulement quelques voitures. Une fois passé Kayenta, on se sent de plus en plus dans l'ambiance Western, en voyant des blocs à droite à gauche. Arrivé à l'entrée du parc, on doit payer 10$. En effet, ce n'est pas un parc naturel mais une réserve d'indiens. Une fois garé, on prend quelques photos et profitons du paysage. Ce n'est pas un si grande sensation d'immensité que le Grand Canyon. Ici, c'est plus l'ambiance Indien/Western qui y règne -la musique à la flûte de pan y aide beaucoup-, la beauté des paysages et ces blocs si particuliers. On se demandent ce qu'ils font là et pourquoi ils sont là.

Après cette petite pause, on reprend la voiture pour descendre réellement dans le parc pour rouler sur un chemin de sable autour de ces blocs et ainsi avoir d'autres points de vue de ces monuments. L'occasion de rencontrer des chevaux en liberté, l'ombre de John Wayne et de sentir encore plus éloigné de la civilisation moderne.

On aura bien mis 2 heures pour faire toute la boucle, parfait pour arriver peu avant 19h pour le coucher de soleil. Cette fois-ci, il sera dans notre dos, lumière parfaite. Un indien -et non un cow-boy, ce n'est pas le chapeau qui fait que...- pose ici pour sa famille (et les touristes ?) pour des photos qui sont assez jolies. Il ne bouge pas d'un poil.

Une fois le soleil couché, c'est à notre tour de penser à notre sommeil. Direction Mexican Hat, un tout petit village un peu plus loin sur la route. Le GPS sera d'ailleurs totalement paumé pour trouver ce village. Nous arrivons à 19h30 pour le check-in. La réceptionniste précise que si l'on veut manger dans leur petit resto, on doit se dépêcher car il est déjà 20h30 ici. Après réflexion et vérifications, nous avons compris que nous avons changé d'état et qu'ils ne sont pas au même fuseau horaire que la Californie. Nous allons donc manger tout de suite pour un repas indien, qui manquera de saveur. Puis dans la chambre d'hôtel, tout le monde est un peu épuisé de la longue journée -un levé et un couché de soleil. Les lits ayant de très bon ressort, je demande à mon frère de faire quelques shoots de Bed Jump (eux n'auront pas voulu se prêté au jeu) :

Wake up at 5am to fill up the icebox, load the car and go out LA, direction East and the Grand Canyon.

After a small navigation error due to the freeway change around downtown, all the road went well. Using the GPS lent by my roommate, by map, by an iPod and its iTrip to listen directly through the radio, we're going to go to the adventure.

Adventure is maybe exaggerate for this first day which will be mostly 8 road hours.

Quick breakfast break at 8:40 in a small freeway stop area to load the gas and readjust the tires pressure. The travel start well, the sky doesn't have any cloud.

After some jam slices of bread et orange juice, driver switch and the miles start again to run in the middle of the desert. Around 12:30, 2nd break for tshe lunch. The picnic  remind me France -yes, who else than French picnic in USA?

Around 2:30pm (the road spent very fast), we're at the Grand Canyon entrance. Stop at the Visitor Center to purchase the pass all the US national parc for $80 ($25 for one parc, 4 or 5 parcs will accept this pass). First meet with tourist, the real one, traveling in buses and follow the others.

Entry in the parc to reach the hostel. The road go along the Grand Canyon. the road side are full; don't forget that we're a Saturday afternoon with a great sun. The temptation is too big, we're stopping along the road to take a look.

And here it's happen. A big claque. It's big. Huuuuge. Impossible to describe the first sensation when facing this immensity. We're staying a few minutes looking far away to the other side, which is around 10 miles awaya, to the best of my recollection. Back to the car to go to the hostel and breathe a quick time.

Once we're in the room, well surprise. For a few little more than $30 / personn with 2 beds, the bedroom is roomy and the bathroom clean. We can't ask more. Later we'll learn that all hostels inside the parc are managed by the same organization, which simplify a lot the reservations. Actually he price depends of the view you have. for whom is interssted, go to Grand Canyon Lodges. We was in the Maswik Lodge.

Each one rest by watching the TV, reading the documentions about the Grand Canyon we've got at the Visitor Center. All along the canyon there is free buses which let you move around all the points of view. All the West part is totally blocked to the public vehicules; only the shuttle can ride it. Moreover a big part of this road was cut to everybody because of road work. Too bad, we won't see everything...

After speeking together, we're going to take the bus to see the point of view of the West part with the bus. We're walking between different points to finish at the sunset in the last point. One bus comes every 10/15 minutes, fully sufficient. The sky went a little bit cloudy, which will make the sunset not too great than expected. But the photos takes before are attractive:

No problems, we'll wake up at 5 tomorrow to profit from the sunrise.over the Grand Canyon, in a point of view where it should be nice.

Levé 5h pour remplir la glacière, charger la voiture et sortir de LA direction l'Est et le Grand Canyon.

Après une petite erreur de navigation au changement d'autoroute au niveau du downtown, toute la route se passa bien. Equipé d'un GPS prêté par mon colloc, de cartes routières (qui datent un peu), d'un iPod et de son iTrip pour écouter directement sur la radio, nous voilà parti à l'aventure.

Aventure est un bien grand mot pour cette première journée qui consistera en près de 8h de routes

Petite pause déjeuner à 8h40 sur une petite aire d'autoroute pour faire le plein et réajuster la pression des pneus. Le voyage commence bien, le ciel ne présente absolument aucun nuage.

Après quelques tartines de confiture et du jus d'orange, changement de chauffeur et les kilomètres se remettent à défiler au milieu du désert. Vers 12h30, 2ème pause pour le déjeuner. Le pique-nique sur l'air d'autoroute à un bon air de France -Bah oui, qui d'autres que des français pique-nique aux US?

Vers 14h30 (oui oui, ça passe vite la route...), arrivée à l'entrée du parc naturel du Grand Canyon. Arrêt au Visitor Center pour acheter le passe pour l'ensemble des parcs naturels d'USA pour 80$ (25$ une entrée unique pour un parc, il est prévu de faire 4 ou 5 parcs qui accepteront cette carte). Premières rencontres avec des touristes, les vrais, ceux qui viennent en bus et suivent les autres.

Entrée dans le parc pour rejoindre notre hôtel. La route longe le Grand Canyon. Les bords sont remplis de voiture, n'oublions pas que nous sommes un samedi après-midi de grand soleil. La tentation est trop grande; on s'arrête le long de la route pour aller au bord et profiter de la vue.

Et là, c'est la grande claque. C'est grand. Immense. Impossible de décrire la première sensation lors du premier coup d'oeil face à cette immensité. On restera quelques minutes à regarder au loin de l'autre côté, qui se trouve au plus près à 17km si ma mémoire est bonne. Retour dans la voiture pour rejoindre l'hôtel et se poser un petit coup.

Arrivée à la chambre, bonne surprise. Pour un peu plus 30$ par personne avec 2 lits, la chambre est spacieuse et la salle de bain propre. On en demandait pas plus. Plus tard on apprendra que les hotels à l'intérieur du parc sont tous gérer par le même organisme, ce qui simplifie beaucoup les réservations. Le prix dépend en fait de la vue que vous avez. Pour ceux que ça intéresse, ça se passe sur Grand Canyon Lodges. Nous étions au Maswik Lodge.

Chacun se repose un peu avec la télé, en feuilletant les prospectus sur le grand Canyon qu'on nous a donné. Tout le long du canyon il y a des bus gratuits qui permettent de se déplacer sur les différents points de vue. Toute la partie Ouest est totalement fermé aux véhicules et seuls les bus peuvent y circuler. De plus, une grande partie de la route est couper à toute circulation pour cause de travaux. Dommage, on ne verra pas tout...

Après concertation, on ira prendre le bus pour faire les points de vue de la partie ouverte uniquement au bus, avec un peu de marche entre certains points, ceci pour rester au coucher du soleil. Un bus toutes les 10/15 minutes circulent sur cette partie, amplement suffisant. Le ciel est devenu quelque peu nuageux, ce qui ne rendra pas le couché de soleil aussi beau qu'on aurait pu l'espérer. Mais les photos d'avant sont quand même bien sympa :

Qu'à cela ne tienne, on se lévera à 5h le lendemain pour pouvoir profiter du lever de soleil sur le Grand Canyon, à un point de vue où c'est censé être joli.
